Metro Orlando Population Swells To 2.3 Million

It’s no secret that the Orlando area is a great place to live. And apparently, that mind set is catching on elsewhere in the nation.

The Orlando metro area population has increased to a massive 2.3 million people in the area.

Orlando isn’t the only area seeing massive growth, South Florida and Tampa/St Petersburg areas also saw population increases over the past year.

Florida has officially surpassed New York as the 3rd most populous state in the country, trailing only Texas and California. It will be a while before Florida ever passes either of those states, but it could happen.

In the past year, metro Orlando grew 50,000 residents while South Florida grew 66,000 and the Tampa/St Petersburg region grew by 41,000 residents.

Breaking it down geographically, Orlando saw the greatest concentration of residents while the Tampa area’s increase was spread out over the Tampa, St Petersburg and Clearwater regions.

South Florida is a massive conglomerate of cities including Miami, Ft Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach.

Could Orlando become the largest city in the state?

It could happen.

Orlando surpassed St Petersburg last year as the 4th largest city in Florida trailing only Tampa, Miami and the state’s largest city of Jacksonville.

With Orlando now being a larger metro area and a larger city, what are some things you’d like to see happen now, so that in 25 years, we don’t have a traffic problem like LA?

I think a streetcar system connecting downtown Orlando with downtown Winter Park would be smart. And a spur to the sports district would be ideal.

Connecting UCF, Lake Nona, Disney, Maitland, and Apopka to Sunrail would also be a wise decision.

What about you? Any ideas as to what we can do now to save us in the future?
